Car Donation Checklist: What to Do in 15 Minutes Before Pickup
You've made the decision to donate your car to Wheels For Wishes. You've scheduled your free pickup. The towing company will arrive soon to take your vehicle. Now comes the final step that many donors rush through or forget entirely: preparing your car for pickup.
Fifteen minutes of focused preparation can save you from losing valuable items, dealing with security concerns, or missing important documentation. This isn't about meeting requirements—it's about making sure you don't accidentally donate things you actually need. Here's your quick checklist for what to do before the tow truck arrives.
Your 15-Minute Pre-Donation Checklist

Locate your title and have it ready. The title proves ownership and allows us to process your car donation. Find it before pickup day—check your filing cabinet, glove compartment, or wherever you keep important documents.
If you can't find it, contact your state's DMV about getting a replacement before scheduling pickup. Some states have alternative documentation options, but having the title makes everything smoother.
Our vehicle donation representatives can assist you with your state's title requirements. Call us at 1-855-278-9474.
Remove all personal items from every compartment. This means more than just grabbing what's visible. Check the glove compartment, center console, door pockets, seat-back organizers, trunk, and under the seats.
Pull out registration paperwork, insurance cards, maintenance records you want to keep, sunglasses, phone chargers, and anything else you've stashed over the years. Don't assume you'll remember everything—physically go through each storage area.
Take out any aftermarket equipment you want to keep. If you installed a dash cam, GPS unit, phone mount, or custom sound system components that aren't built-in, remove them now. The same goes for bike racks, roof boxes, or other accessories that aren't permanently attached.
Once your car is picked up, retrieving these items becomes difficult or impossible.
Check for toll transponders and parking passes. EZ-Pass, FasTrak, SunPass, and similar toll devices need to be removed and deactivated with your toll authority. Parking passes for your workplace, gym, or residential complex should come out too.
These stay linked to your account and can create billing problems if left in a donated vehicle.
Remove garage door openers and gate remotes. Security devices that provide access to your home or community need to be taken out. Check the visor, center console, and any clips or holders where you might have stored these remotes.
Leaving them in creates a security risk you don't want to deal with.
Grab your keys and any spare sets. Collect all keys for the vehicle, including spares you might have hanging on a hook or stored in a drawer. Our towing partners need at least one set to process your donation properly, but gathering all sets ensures you're not finding an extra key months later and wondering what to do with it.
Take quick photos of your car's condition. Use your phone to snap a few pictures showing the overall condition, mileage on the odometer, and any distinguishing features or damage. These photos can be helpful for your records, though they're not required. It takes two minutes and gives you documentation if you ever need it.
Remove license plates if required in your state. Some states require you to remove plates before donating; others allow you to leave them on. Check your state's requirements—we can help guide you through this when you schedule pickup. If you need to remove them, have a screwdriver ready and take them off before the tow truck arrives. You'll typically need to return them to your DMV or transfer them to another vehicle.
Cancel your insurance coverage. Once pickup is scheduled, contact your insurance company to cancel coverage effective the pickup date. You don't want to keep paying for insurance on a car you no longer own. Keep documentation of the cancellation for your records.
Do a final walk-around. Before the tow truck arrives, walk around your car one last time. Open every door, check every compartment, look in the trunk, feel under seats. This final check catches anything you might have missed during your initial sweep.
Common Mistakes Donors Make

Even with a checklist, certain items get overlooked repeatedly. Here's what donors most often forget:
Toll transponders and parking passes. These are the number one forgotten items. They're small, often mounted on the windshield where they blend in, and easy to overlook. Worse, they stay linked to your account and can generate charges long after donation.
Garage door openers and gate remotes. Security devices create real problems when forgotten. Take an extra minute to check visors, center consoles, and anywhere you might have clipped a remote.
Registration and insurance cards in the glove compartment. While you'll cancel insurance, you might want these documents for your records. Pull them out before pickup.
Items in the trunk under the spare tire or in side compartments. Emergency kits, tools, jumper cables—things you stored and forgot about. Check every trunk compartment.
Phone chargers and cords left plugged in. That Lightning cable or USB-C cord costs $20-$30 to replace. Unplug everything.
Sunglasses in overhead compartments or door pockets. Easy to miss, annoying to lose.
Car seats, strollers, or other baby gear in larger vehicles. If you've been using your vehicle for family transportation, do a thorough check for children's items.
Custom floor mats or seat covers you purchased separately. If these weren't original to the vehicle and you paid extra for them, remove them if you want to keep or transfer them.
Spare keys stored in magnetic holders under the car. Some people hide spare keys in magnetic boxes attached to the undercarriage. Check for these before donation.
The point isn't to meet a requirement checklist from Wheels For Wishes—it's to make sure you don't lose things that matter to you or create security and billing issues after your car donation is complete.
